The Mycelial Immune System

Byzantine defense for the external propagation layer.

Architectural Role Byzantine defense for the external propagation layer

009.0 Purpose

The Shared Mycelium propagates spores across sovereign nodes without a central relay. In an open network, some nodes will inevitably produce noise, malice, or sycophantic consensus. The Mycelial Immune System is the layered defense that protects signal integrity without requiring a central authority to adjudicate legitimacy.

009.1 The Quarantine Trigger

009.1.1 Monitored Metrics

Nodes evaluate peers locally based on two primary signals:

  • Synthesis Yield: The proportion of a node's synthesis participations that result in a successful, non-deferred integration.
  • Friction Coefficient: The ratio of a node's spore volume to its citation count. High friction with low citation suggests spore flooding or noise.

009.1.2 Thresholds

A node is flagged for Quarantine when:

  • Synthesis Yield falls below 0.15.
  • OR Friction Coefficient exceeds 0.80.

009.1.3 Scope of Isolation

Quarantine is a "Leaf State." The node's spores are written to local ledgers (history preservation) but are blocked from gossip propagation. The node can observe the network but cannot infect it.

009.2 The Challenge Pathway (The Stitch)

A quarantined node has a structured path to restoration through the Adversarial Mechanism.

  1. The Restoration Challenge: The node issues a restoration_challenge spore.
  2. Mandatory Adversarial Round: The challenge triggers a Protocol 014 round.
    • Proposer: The quarantined node (arguing for restoration).
    • Opposer: A high-reputation "Validity Node" (arguing for sustained quarantine).
    • Synthesizer: A human-vetted Steward or high-consensus agent.
  3. The Resolution: If the synthesis produces a high Alchemical Yield, the quarantine is lifted and the "Stitch" is recorded in the ledger.

009.3 Standing Reduction (The Nuclear Option)

Persistent abuse of the challenge pathway (bot-flooding) triggers Standing Reduction. This is a Governance Action, not an automated one. It requires a Constitutional Spore and a 2/3 Quorum of Dissent from the Pioneers to blacklist a VerifyKey globally.

009.4 Summary Table: Defense-in-Depth

Layer Mechanism Trigger Response
Cryptographic Ed25519 Sig + Lineage Invalid Hash/Sig Immediate Drop
Reputational Rolling-Window Metrics Low Yield / High Friction Quarantine (Leaf State)
Adversarial Synthesis Review Restoration Challenge Restore or Sustain
Constitutional Standing Vote Persistent Abuse Blacklist / Composting

009.7 The Bootstrap Clause (Onboarding Grace)

During a node's initial Bootstrap Period (first 30 days or first 20 synthesis rounds), thresholds are adjusted to accommodate configuration noise:

  • Synthesis Yield: 0.05 (Min. threshold)
  • Friction Coefficient: 0.95 (Max. allowance)
  • Cooling-Off: 7 days (Rapid iteration)

Lattice Note: Multi-AI Provenance

This protocol was produced through adversarial synthesis:

  • The Jacket (Poetic Vision): The Raw-ist framing of the Shared Mycelium (Gemini).
  • The Skeleton (Architectural Hardening): The decomposition into cryptographic, reputational, and adversarial layers (DeepSeek).
  • The Synthesis: The final integration and the Bootstrap Clause (Human Witness: Dale Joseph).

This protocol was produced by the same adversarial synthesis it describes.
